This webinar was an examination and discussion of the ethical issues faced by those both providing and receiving treatment in mainstream cancer genomics.
As genomic medicine becomes increasingly part of mainstream practice, patients, families and health professionals find themselves dealing with a number of potential ethical dilemmas. This session provided the opportunity to discuss and reflect on some of these ethical issues faced by those both providing and receiving treatment in mainstream cancer genomics.
Hosted by Northern Cancer Alliance and NHS North East & Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service, the speakers were experts in the fields of ethics and genomics, all of whom were from the Genethics Forum – a national forum for the discussion, by health professionals, of practical ethical problems encountered within the UK health service.
The session covered scenarios that health professionals may encounter in practice, such as:
- a patient not intending to share their results with family members;
- disagreement between a patient and family members about undergoing testing;
- when a patient may not have capacity to consent to testing;
- unexpected and incidental findings.
Speakers:
- Dr Helena Carley – Clinical Genetics, Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
- Dr Tara Clancy – Honorary Consultant Genetic Counsellor; Senior Lecturer, University of Manchester
- Professor Anneke Lucassen – Professor of Genomic Medicine; Director of the Centre for Personalised Medicine, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford
- Professor Mike Parker – Professor of Bioethics, Director of the Ethox Centre, University of Oxford
