Below you’ll find a welcome and introduction to our new Pharmacy Interns: Kemi, Adam, Jess and Laura; along with information on updated guidance for DPYD Testing; and the Future of Hospital Pharmacy Conference.

Welcome to our new Pharmacy Interns

Four new interns have joined the NEY GMS team to work on projects relating to Pharmacogenomics. At the beginning of November, the interns presented their projects to a select audience to gain feedback and support in shaping their plans for the next 6 months. We’ll keep you posted on progress but here’s an introduction to each of our interns and the projects they hope to deliver…

Hi, I’m Kemi and I work in primary care, supporting chronic pain management within the community setting.

My project is geared towards undertaking an impact assessment of the implementation of NICE recommendations for using CYP2C19 genetic testing to guide Clopidogrel use after Ischaemic Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack, as well as supporting readiness across the North East and Yorkshire.

Hi, I’m Adam and I work as a mental health pharmacist in an Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) service.

My project will explore the genomics educational and training needs of the pharmacy workforce. In particular, I aim to connect with pharmacy educators across the region, to better understand their awareness and use of the recently published pharmacy genomics workforce, education, and training strategic framework.

Hi, I’m Jess and I work in primary care, providing medicines optimisation support to several GP surgeries in South Yorkshire whilst also completing my BTEC Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy Services and Therapeutics.

During my internship, I will be delivering a project focused on the training and education needs of the pharmacy technician workforce in relation to genomics.

Hi, I’m Laura and I’m the Lead Pharmacy Technician for medicines safety at the South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board.

As a loving mum of three with a keen interest in pharmacogenomics, inspired my sons’ journeys with cystic fibrosis, I’m working on facilitating the uptake of MT-RNR1 genotyping. I’m passionate about exploring how personalised medicine can improve treatment options and outcomes for families like mine.

Update to Guidance for DPYD Testing

An update to the national Personalised Medicine Approach for Fluoropyrimidine-based Therapies has been published here . It provides clinical staff with guidance as to which patients should receive a DPYD test and then subsequently provides advice on the outcome of that test.
