Steven recently joined the NEY GMS team as Research & Innovation Director. By way of introduction, Steve has shared his bio, to give us some insights into his career to date and why he’s excited to be a part of the team.

I am delighted to join the NEY Genomic Medicine Service to lead the development of the research and innovation strategy.

I bring with me experience of working in academic and healthcare sectors in a range of leadership roles which have focussed on enabling the development, delivery and embedding of research and innovation to improve health outcomes.

I was brought up in Teesside and studied Biochemistry at Newcastle University before going on to complete an MSc in Toxicology at Birmingham University, and a PhD in Biomedical Science at Nottingham University. I then spent several years working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Universities of Sheffield and Durham within the fields of infectious diseases and medicinal chemistry.

I made the switch from academia into the NHS in 2008, working initially as a Clinical Trials Practitioner for the Cancer Research Network, before moving into a team leadership role for the Clinical Research Network working across County Durham and Tees Valley. In 2014 I joined the North East and North Cumbria Clinical Research Network as a member of the senior management team.

Over the last 10 years I have supported the delivery of NIHR health and care research across a wide range of settings and clinical specialties including genetics, paediatrics, reproductive health & childbirth, mental health, dementia and degenerative diseases.

I will be working for NEY GMS on a part time basis, initially until October 2024, whilst also continuing in my role with the NIHR CRN.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and teenage sons exploring the North Yorkshire coastline near our home in Redcar. My other passion is football; I support/endure the Boro, and I’m a coach for a local junior football team.

I look forward to working together to develop the R&I strategy to help drive improvements that make a real difference to people’s lives.
