In early 2024, NHS England launched eight NHS Genomic Networks of Excellence as part of its commitment to provide a world-leading NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) which provides cutting edge benefits for patients in the NHS.

Designed as partnerships between the NHS, academia, the third sector and industry, these innovative networks aim to develop the evidence and model of adoption for cutting edge genomic advances and technology applications that will be transformative for patients.

Transforming Care for Patients using Genomics

In the North East and Yorkshire, we will contribute to all eight networks (listed below) and play a leading role in the first four:

  • Haemato-oncology (led by Dr Polly Talley, more here)
  • Rare and inherited disease (led by Professor Rob Taylor)
  • Prenatal genomic medicine (led by Dr Jen Campbell)
  • Pharmacogenomic and medicines optimisation (led by Emma Groves)
  • Genomics artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Circulating tumour biomarker testing
  • Severe presentation of infectious disease
  • Improving identification and outcomes for individuals with inherited and acquired cardiovascular disease
