Nursing LIVE proves a huge success for engaging nurses in genomics!
The popular RCNi Nursing Live conference provides an annual opportunity for thousands of nurses from right across the professional spectrum to come together and hear about the newest trends, the latest clinical breakthroughs, and the freshest thinking. And it’s the reason why we attended.
Working with a team from the North West GMSA, we made our way over to Liverpool Exhibition Centre to jointly host a dedicated stand over the 2 days of the conference, 23-24 October. And a busier two days we could not have imagined, as the team and I discussed the critical role of genomics in contemporary healthcare with almost 350 nurses – from students through to experienced leaders.
Whilst knowledge of genomics was generally limited amongst those we spoke with, interest in finding out about the integration of genomics into nursing practice was high… with the stand being inundated from the moment we ‘opened up shop’ each morning.
The event not only gave us the chance to speak to nursing colleagues about genomics – often for the first time – but also point them in the direction of training and educational resources provided by the Genomic Education Programme (GEP) Genomics – Shaping the Future of Nursing. Particularly as many of those we chatted with expressed excitement and curiosity about how genomics could enhance patient care, leading to personalised treatment plans and improved patient outcomes.
Overall, events like this help us to tap into the enthusiasm and interest of attendees to support professional development, raising awareness amongst nurses about the changing healthcare landscape and the role genomics will play in this brave new world.
